Kutcher was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to factory worker Larry M. Kutcher and Diane (née Finnegan), a Procter & Gamble employee. He is of Irish, German, and Czech descent.

In a “pretty conservative” Catholic family, Kutcher was brought up. He has a fraternal twin brother named Michael and an elder sister named Tausha. When the brothers were small children, Michael underwent a heart transplant. Michael, a spokeswoman for the campaign group Reaching for the Stars, also suffers cerebral palsy. Michael’s cardiomyopathy made life at home for Kutcher more difficult. He once remarked, “I kept myself so busy that I didn’t allow myself to feel,” that he “didn’t want to come home and receive more awful news” about his brother. Before moving with his family to Homestead, Iowa, where he attended Clear Creek-Amana High School, Kutcher spent his first year of high school in Cedar Rapids at Washington High School. He became passionate in acting in high school and participated in several school productions. He and his cousin snuck into his high school at midnight during his final year in an effort to steal money; they were caught fleeing the scene. After being found guilty of third-degree burglary, Kutcher was given a three-year probationary period and 180 hours of community service. Although the event “straightened him out,” Kutcher claimed that he also lost his fiancée and his chance at college scholarships, as well as being shunned at school and in his neighborhood.

In order to treat his brother’s cardiac condition, Kutcher enrolled at the University of Iowa in August 1996 with an intention to major in biochemical engineering. For being too “noisy” and “crazy,” Kutcher’s flat at the university was evicted. In order to pay for college, Kutcher worked as a college summer hire in the cereal department for the General Mills plant in Cedar Rapids and occasionally sold his blood plasma. He claimed, “I thought I knew everything but I didn’t have a clue. I was partying, and I woke up many mornings not knowing what I had done the night before. I played way too hard. I am amazed I am not dead.” He entered the “Fresh Faces of Iowa” modeling contest while he was a student at the University of Iowa after being approached by a model scout at The Airliner bar in Iowa City, Iowa. He got a trip to the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) Convention in New York City for taking first place. Kutcher left Iowa to live in New York City, then went back to Cedar Rapids before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

He trains in the martial art Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and is a brown belt under Rigan Machado.
