Arne Slot has addressed the challenge of finding the best role for Darwin Nunez, as the forward continues to struggle for a regular place in Liverpool’s starting lineup.

Nunez has made seven appearances for the Reds so far in the 2024/25 season, including four in the Premier League, with three of those coming off the bench. While Diogo Jota appears to be Slot’s preferred striker, Nunez has yet to secure a consistent spot, often limited to cup games or late substitutions.

A potential role for Nunez on the left wing is available, but with Luis Diaz in excellent form and Cody Gakpo impressing as a backup, the Uruguayan finds himself on the fringes of the squad.

Slot admitted that determining Nunez’s ideal position is still a work in progress, and Liverpool are eager to see the forward earn more time on the pitch.

“I think it’s the challenge we, as staff, always have to bring the best out of individuals,” Slot said. “We try to position Darwin differently than Diogo because they are not the same type of player.

“Their teammates also adjust to whoever they’re playing with. As a manager, I need to do the same. He didn’t score in his last game because of an offside, but when we create chances for him, he can score. Unfortunately, we haven’t brought him into the right positions enough.

“If I’m honest, even Diogo hasn’t had many goals. Most of our goals have come from our wingers so far. Diogo scored twice against West Ham from a number 10 position, so we may need to look at how we bring both him and Darwin into better scoring positions.”

Liverpool will be back in action on Saturday against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park before the international break.
