He is most known for playing Dr. Mark Greene on the first eight seasons of ER, for which he won a Golden Globe, six Screen Actors Guild Awards, and was nominated for four straight Primetime Emmy Awards. For this portrayal, he gained widespread acclaim. In addition to Top Gun, Zodiac, Gotcha!, Miracle Mile, Revenge of the Nerds, Planes, Northern Exposure, and Designated Survivor, he has also featured in a number of other movies and television shows.

Edwards was one of five children born to Erika Kem Edwards Plack (née Weber), an artist and landscape painter, and architect Peter Edwards in Santa Barbara, California. Kem Weber, a designer, was his maternal grandpa. He has some German and Irish ancestry. In 1980, he received his high school diploma from San Marcos. Edwards’ parents advised him to go to college before following his passion in acting, which was sparked by the local theater scene. He studied drama at the University of Southern California and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in England. However, by the time he was nineteen, he was being given enough acting jobs to allow him to drop out of college.
