Andre Onana suggests that Manchester United’s second season under manager Erik ten Hag would have been more successful if not for a string of injuries plaguing the squad.
The Red Devils aim to salvage their campaign in the FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, a rematch of last year’s encounter at Wembley Stadium where City prevailed 2-1.
Speculation has swirled regarding Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting he may be dismissed after the season finale. However, Onana believes the Dutchman faced significant challenges due to the unavailability of key players.

“I’m not here to offer blind support because he’s capable of advocating for himself. But he’s genuinely a good coach, positive in his approach, and tactically astute,” Onana told BBC Sport. “With a fully fit squad, the scenario might have been different for him, for us, the club, and the fans.”
Acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by City, Onana stressed the team’s motivation to secure victory in the final. Despite recognizing the significance of winning the FA Cup, he believes it alone wouldn’t define a successful season for United.
Reflecting on his own performance since joining United, Onana acknowledged initial struggles after impressing during his stint with Inter. However, he remains determined to overcome setbacks and reaffirm his abilities.
“I arrived as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and suddenly everything changed. It was a perplexing turn of events,” Onana remarked. “But that’s the nature of football sometimes. It’s about whether you choose to stay down or rise up and fight. I know my capabilities and what I’ve achieved to reach this point. I’ve chosen to stand up and fight.”
Despite the challenges, Onana concluded the league season with nine clean sheets, ranking among the top goalkeepers in England’s Premier League.
