Former Super Eagles winger, Emmanuel Amuneke, has disclosed that Zamalek, the Egyptian club, missed the opportunity to sign Victor Osimhen back in 2015.

Osimhen, who played under Amuneke at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile and won the Golden Boot with ten goals, was recommended by Amuneke to his former club at the time. However, Zamalek opted not to pursue the forward, and Osimhen eventually signed with the German club VFL Wolfsburg.

Amuneke, discussing the matter with MBC Masr, stated, “I don’t want to go into many details about the matter of offering Osimhen to Zamalek. Zamalek is always my club, and whenever I see a good player, I will do the same. One of the problems we face in Africa is the lack of courage in giving opportunities to young players. We always look for the ready player in Africa, although the young ones are the stars of the future. I suggested Osimhen’s name to people at Zamalek, and the answer was ‘We are going to watch him,’ but nothing happened at all.”

The 25-year-old faced challenges during his time at Wolfsburg, spending loan spells at different clubs before making a move to Ligue 1 club Lille. After a season with Lille, Osimhen joined Napoli, contributing to their Serie A title victory last season.

Osimhen’s achievements were acknowledged as he was crowned Africa’s Best Player at the CAF Awards 2023 in December.
