Nigeria defeated Liberia 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying match on Friday, giving Musa his 99th international cap.

After Kelechi Iheanacho’s brace handed the three-time African champions a two-goal advantage in the 84th minute, the 28-year-old came on to replace him.

The Kano Pillars veteran has 98 caps going into the game, eight more than his predecessor, John Obi Mikel.

If he plays in Nigeria’s next two games against Cape Verde and Central African Republic, he might match their achievement.

Musa rose to prominence after helping Nigeria’s U23 team win the WAFU Nations Cup in 2010, scoring goals against Benin Republic and Burkina Faso.

On August 5, 2010, he earned his senior debut against Madagascar in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match.
