The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, recently engaged in a conversation with Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, addressing the issue of cyberbullying directed at the Fulham star. The minister’s media aide, Diana-Mary Tiku Nsan, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
Having led the Super Eagles back home after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast, Enoh expressed his awareness of the social media criticism and emphasized the ministry’s commitment to combat bullying against not only Iwobi but all athletes.
“We are concerned about how our sportsmen and women are treated,” said Enoh.

The AFCON 2023 final saw Iwobi subjected to unwarranted criticism on social media, prompting him to confirm his decision to step away from such platforms after the game.
In response, Minister Enoh offered words of encouragement to the former Arsenal star, acknowledging his contribution to the team’s success:
“You did your best for your country, and I am proud of you. The leadership and the rest of the country are proud of you. Those who are not represent the far minority and do not speak for the rest of our country, so just be strong.”
Enoh highlighted Iwobi’s significant role in securing a silver medal, the first for Nigeria since AFCON 2000, and expressed gratitude for the midfielder’s dedication, stating, “You put in your best, thank you very much.”
