Parts of Côte d’Ivoire, the host country for the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), are currently experiencing a power outage. The revelation was made by Nigerian sports journalist Suleiman Adebayo during an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, following Nigeria’s lone-goal victory against Guinea-Bissau on Monday.
Adebayo noted that the power disruption has persisted for over five hours in significant cities across Côte d’Ivoire. He speculated, “There is a power outage here for about five hours, perhaps due to the 4-0 loss by the Ivorians to Equatorial Guinea.”
This occurrence follows the Ivorian national team’s heavy 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea on Monday. Equatorial Guinea secured the top spot in group A, while Nigeria finished as runners-up with seven points.

It is worth recalling that on January 4, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a 40% increase in the prize money for the winner of AFCON 2023. The ultimate winner of the tournament will now receive $7,000,000, with the runner-up earning $4,000,000, and the two semi-finalists each awarded $2,500,000. Additionally, the four quarter-finalists will receive $1,300,000 each.
