Former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje, has expressed dissatisfaction with the makeup of the Super Eagles squad set for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Head coach Jose Peseiro revealed the 25-man squad for the competition last week, but Sodje believes the squad lacks balance, particularly in the absence of a creative player.
In an interview with Brila FM, Sodje voiced his concerns, stating, “We are heading to the AFCON with an imbalanced squad, taking too many strikers and lacking creativity in the midfield. We need players who can pass the ball forward and create chances to secure victories.”
The former Reading center-back also raised apprehensions about the team’s defense and goalkeeping department, emphasizing the importance of a solid defense for success in the competition.

“We are going with players who tend to make too many side passes, and we’ve been conceding goals frequently. A robust defense is crucial to winning a tournament,” Sodje remarked. Additionally, he highlighted the well-known challenges in the goalkeeping department.
Despite these concerns, Sodje affirmed support for the Super Eagles, acknowledging the fans’ commitment to backing the team.
