The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has said Augustine Eguavoen could keep the national team job on a permanent basis, if he leads the country to glory at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Eguavoen took over the Super Eagles on an interim basis, after Gernot Rohr was sacked in December.

He has led the team to two wins out of two fixtures at the AFCON in Cameroon, ensuring qualification for the knockout rounds.

However, Jose Peseiro, who has notably coached Sporting in his native Portugal, Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Saudi Arabia, is due to start work after AFCON, meaning he will be tasked with ensuring they qualify for the World Cup.

However, Pinnick has hinted that Eguavoen could keep the job.

“We know that Eguavoen can do the job expertly, but we also know that he will be more useful controlling the technical department.

“If Eguavoen won the Cup of Nations, we might have a rethink. In that case, the foreign coach would become the technical director,” Pinnick told AFP.
