Mrs Tina Ugbonaya, the woman accused of withholding her employee’s 5-month-old baby, Chidubem, who has since died, has spoken up.

Gift gave birth to her child in June, according to Mrs Ugbonaya in an interview with Punch. She stated that the child was born healthy but lacked Gift’s mother care. Gift allegedly abandoned her kid one month after she gave birth, stating that her uncle had enrolled her for the WAEC exam.

She claims Gift has refused to feed the child or even breastfeed the baby since the infant was born. She claimed Gift ran away from her home because she and her husband insisted she care for her child. She claimed she sent the infant boy to a nurse to look after since he had become underweight as a result of Gift’s carelessness. Mrs Ugbonaya claimed to have paid N30,000 to the nurse to look after the infant. She denied kidnapping the child.

Her husband, who also spoke, backed up her assertions that Gift had abandoned her child.

Gift, for her part, claimed that her husband had moved her from the village to Lagos and was looking after her well. She said that she gave birth to her child in June, that she wanted to visit home in August, and that when she returned, the pair began abusing her.

After accusing her of going out to meet guys, Gift claimed that her husband asked her to leave the house. She said she was booted out in the middle of the night and that when she called the next day to find out when she could pick up her daughter, the husband told her she had to pay for everything they had spent in the hospital, which he claimed was N200,000, before she could see her child. Mrs Ugbonaya later called Gift, alleging that the hospital cost was N5 million and that she needed to pay the money before her kid could be returned.

Mrs Ugbonaya, she claimed, hung on to her kid for a month until he died.
