William Saliba has only played for a little under 30 minutes in this year’s World Cup, but the France and Arsenal star might start in the championship game. That’s because Raphael Varane and Konate, Didier Deschamps’ two top choices to start at center back, are apparently not feeling well.
Saliba is having a fantastic season at the club level with the top-ranked Gunners of the Premier League, but Deschamps’ selection of Varane and Konate has been supported by France’s success at the competition.
But according to Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport, the center-back pair are now unwell. He claims that, as things stand, their predicament isn’t “alarming,” but the medical staff is keeping an eye on how things pan out.
Hawkins declared: “Two further guys got sick. Raphael Varane and Ibrahima Konate are defenders. Although their situation is not urgent, the personnel will attentively watch their health. Better is Kingley Coman.”

Saliba only appeared once at the World Cup this year, during the group stage when Tunisia defeated Les Bleus 1-0. He replaced Varane that day from the bench and hasn’t played since.
However, his performances for Arsenal have demonstrated that he is all than capable of playing in high-pressure games, so should Varane’s or Konate’s circumstances worsen, he will be prepared to step-up if necessary.
