The defender for Manchester United said: “She battled cancer for a very long time, and sadly, she died right before the first game. She had endured a great deal of suffering while battling cancer. It had taken a while.
“I got along great with Gareth. He asked me if everything was well and if I needed some time apart. I am very passionate about this World Cup. I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything, and I had time to be sad. You might say that contributes to my motivation.
I spent a lot of time with her and she was a big part of my childhood.
