Just two months after Thomas Tuchel was replaced by Graham Potter in a comparable move from the south coast, the 43-year-old moves to the club from Brighton. Importantly, he is prepared to begin the job right away and is expected to be instrumental as the January transfer window draws near.
After hiring Joe Shields from Southampton in their revamped recruitment department, Chelsea has now announced the appointment of Winstanley as their second director-level hire. However, he cannot begin working at SW6 until he has completed his contract with Southampton.
Chelsea shared the news in a statement on the team’s website, with co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali stating: “Paul will be a fantastic addition to Chelsea.
He is well-respected and an important senior addition as we try to assemble a world-class athletic group with a wealth of talent, aspirations, and dedication that will collaborate with us to advance Chelsea. Paul will fit right into the organization and shares our mindset.”
Winstanley sent a comment in addition, saying: “I’m happy to be working with Graham Potter and his team again at Chelsea. The new ownership and this project are both surrounded by a strong sense of excitement and drive. As the club enters a new age, I’m excited to work with such an exceptional set of coworkers.”
