Following Aston Villa’s 3-0 Premier League loss to Fulham on Thursday, Steven Gerrard was fired as manager.
“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and devotion and wish him well for the future,” a club spokeswoman said.
Villa only has two victories in the league this year, and they are just above the danger zone in terms of goals scored.

In November 2021, after leaving his position as manager of Rangers, Gerrard took over for Dean Smith as Villa’s manager.
However, during his 11 months in command, the 42-year-old former England and Liverpool midfielder managed Villa to just 13 victories from 40 games.
He stated on BBC Match of the Day following the loss to Fulham: “I took over the team in a very similar predicament, and we’ve tried to recruit to get us out of that situation. Inconsistency has cost us, that’s the circumstance we find ourselves in.
“I was born to fight; it’s in my DNA. Until I’m told otherwise, I’ll keep fighting.”
After about an hour, he lost control of the Villa.
Prior to the news of Gerrard’s leaving, captain John McGinn said: “It is embarrassing to participate in. We failed the boss and the away supporters. We’re having an awful night.
“It makes no difference who manages that team; the players must examine themselves in the mirror. We haven’t lost faith in [the manager]; it’s us who need to take responsibility.”
He is a top manager, and he is suffering the same as the players. We failed him tonight. Now it’s up to us to do well for him.
At Craven Cottage, Villa supporters shouted several anti-Gerrard chants throughout the game.
“I understand the fans’ frustration,” McGinn continued. Those yells can have a negative effect. As a result of the support’s high demands, I can appreciate the annoyance. If you don’t perform while playing at a high level, you get criticized.
When Gerrard was the manager of Villa, he brought in a number of well-known players, including as the Barcelona forward Phillipe Coutinho, the Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, and the French midfielder Boubacar Kamara, who had been associated with some of the best teams in Europe.
However, Kamara is anticipated to remain sidelined until the new year with a knee ligament damage sustained against Southampton last month, and Carlos suffered a catastrophic ankle injury on his home debut.
Tyrone Mings, a defender for England, was replaced as captain by Scotland’s McGinn in the summer. However, McGinn has had a difficult start to the season.
Michael Beale, Gerrard’s assistant who had been with him since Rangers, departed Villa in the summer to manage QPR.

Prior to guiding the under-18 team in the 2017–18 season, he was an academy coach at Liverpool.
Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Leicester and a recent target of criticism, oversaw Gerrard at Liverpool.
Rodgers stated, “I’m extremely unhappy for Steven; he did an outstanding job at Rangers, and I suppose the objectives at Villa are to challenge for Europe.
“It seems like a manager loses his job or has their career threatened every day, and I fear that stability and patience are dwindling.
“I think he could have made it to where that football team wants to go with time and patience,” the author said.
