After rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament on the championships’ eve, she was later unable to participate in the Women’s Euro 2022.

Putellas was once again awarded the best player in the world by France Football in Paris despite missing the competition while three of her four colleagues Ballon d’Or candidates competed.

Beth Mead, the driving force behind England’s Euros victory, came in second, but Putellas was the crowd favorite and delivered an impassioned speech in which she discussed a trying time in her career.

She said, “Thanks to France Football and the jury members. “On April 5, I fractured my knee, and I thought there was no way I could win the Ballon d’Or because I thought people would remember the recent European Championship.

“I would like to extend my sincere compliments to the English FA for the organization of the European Championship and the positive influence they are having on women’s football in that nation. They serve as an illustration of how they should act.
