Edwards was one of five children born to Erika Kem Edwards Plack (née Weber), an artist and landscape painter, and architect Peter Edwards in Santa Barbara, California. Kem Weber, a designer, was his maternal grandpa. He has some German and Irish ancestry. In 1980, he received his high school diploma from San Marcos. Edwards’ parents advised him to go to college before following his passion in acting, which was sparked by the local theater scene. He studied drama at the University of Southern California and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in England.
