Her parents, Anne (née Volant) and Peter (“Pete”) James Rowling, had traveled together by train the year before to their respective naval stations in Arbroath, Scotland. Pete was in the Royal Navy, while Anne was with the Wrens. They both hailed from middle-class families; Pete’s father set machine tools before opening a grocery store. They got married on March 14, 1965, when they were both 19. They abandoned the navy life and looked for a rural place to raise the child they were expecting. Pete began working as an assembly-line worker at the Bristol Siddeley factory after the Rowlings moved to Yate.

In a bar, five months after moving in Porto, Rowling discovered that she and Jorge Arantes, a Portuguese television journalist, had a similar interest in Jane Austen. Midway through 1992, they were preparing to travel to London to meet Rowling’s family when she miscarried. Despite having a rocky relationship, they got married on October 16, 1992. On July 27, 1993, in Portugal, their daughter Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes (named after Jessica Mitford) was born. After Arantes threw her out of the house on November 17, 1993, Rowling and Arantes split up. She went back with the police to get Jessica and spent two weeks in hiding before leaving Portugal.  J. K. Rowling Education

Rowling started attending Wyedean School and College, a public school, when she was eleven years old. The director of science at Wyedean, John Nettleship, called Anne “extremely outstanding, a fascinating character, very inventive.” Rowling had always aspired to be a writer, but for pragmatic reasons she decided to study French and the classics at the University of Exeter, pushed by her parents who believed that having evidence of bilingualism would improve her chances of finding employment. According to her biographers, she was a typical Exeter student who prioritized her social life over her schoolwork and lacked desire and excitement. At university, Rowling recalled doing little work and spending more time reading Tolkien and Dickens. After a year, she graduated from Exeter with a BA in French in 1987.

J. K. Rowling Philanthropy & Generosity

The Volant Charitable Trust, which Rowling named after her mother, was founded in 2000 while she was still writing the Harry Potter books. “Alleviate social deprivation, with a particular emphasis on aiding women, children, and young people at risk,” is its stated objective. In 2005, Rowling and MEP Emma Nicholson established the Children’s High Level Group, which is now known as Lumos. After serving as its first ambassador since 2000, she was named president of the nonprofit organization One Parent Families (formerly Gingerbread) in 2004.  Additionally, she and Sarah Brown worked together to write a collection of children’s tales for One Parent Families. Before 2012, Forbes pegged Rowling’s charity contributions at $160 million. She came in second place behind musician Elton John in terms of UK donors’ generosity in 2015 giving about $14 million.

J. K. Rowling Awards and Honours

Awards for general literature, children’s literature, and speculative fiction have all been given to Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The first two volumes, Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets, won the Children’s Book of the Year category at the British Book Awards. The third book, Prisoner of Azkaban, was up for an adult award, the Whitbread Book of the Year, where it faced off against the Beowulf translation by Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney. Rowling received the children’s prize instead, which was worth just half as much money, which some academics said demonstrated a bias against children’s novels in literature. She earned the Book of the Year award from the British Book Awards and the Hugo Award from the World Science Fiction Convention for her fourth book, Goblet of Fire.

In 2011, Rowling and the Harry Potter film cast and crew shared the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema. Her other honors include the 2021 British Book Awards Crime and Thriller prize for the fifth book in her Cormoran Strike series, as well as the 2017 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
