It’s hard to think that we’ve already lost several well-known people just a few days into 2022. Some of these early losses are particularly tough to accept because they cast a pall over the anticipation and excitement of a new year.

But, at the start of what promises to be another hard year, pausing to admire and appreciate so much of what these famous figures have given to our world provides us with a moment of contemplation that we all need.

1. Lari Williams, the ace Nigerian actor, died after a long battle with an undisclosed ailment.

Abubakar Yakubu, national secretary of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), confirmed his death to TheCable Lifestyle on Monday. Yakubu said the film star, 81, wrote to the AGN that he was sick last week. He added that the guild was still trying to raise resources to support him when news of his death broke. It is understood that the actor died at his home in Ikom, Cross River state, on Sunday. Williams was the first president of the AGN and had an illustrious career in the movie landscape that spanned over five decades.

 

2. Betty Davis, 77, was a funk singer from the 1960s and passed away on February 9 in her Pennsylvania home.

An official statement released by her record company announced her passing but did not state the cause of her death.

She was known to be a pioneer in the music industry, not allowing anyone to influence her image or sound.

Her music has recently affected a new generation and was featured in the TV series Orange Is the New Black, Girlboss, Mixed-ish, and High Fidelity.

 

3. It was announced on February 21st that Jamal Edwards, a British music executive and founder of SB.TV, a platform for grooming emerging artists, has passed away.

 

Brenda Edwards, his mother, confirmed his death in a touching tribute. According to her, the 31-year-old died after “a sudden illness.”

She described Jamal as an inspiration to many, including herself, adding that “he was the center of our world.”

4. Sally Kellerman passed away at the age of 84 in February 2022, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

 

The beloved actress was best known for her role as Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” O’Houlihan in the 1970 film M*A*S*H, for which she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.

5. Veteran Nollywood actor, Mr. John Adewuni (also known as Tafa Oloyede), died on February 1, 2022, after a brief illness.

The incident was confirmed by the General Secretary, Theater Art and Motion Picture Producers Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Osun Branch. Ademola Oyedokun said the actor died at his Arowomole residence in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.

6. News went viral on the 10th of February 2022 that famed TV presenter and actress Nomakula “Kuli” Robert had passed away. She died at the age of 49.

Reports from colleagues and friends confirmed that she died just before a radio interview. It was later confirmed that she died of a seizure.
