Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett was born on 3 February 1941 in Lagos, Western Region of Colonial Nigeria, as the first of a set of twin daughters. Her father was of Awori descent. She attended Mt Carmel Convent School in Lagos before continuing her education at Methodist Girls’ High School in Lagos.

She became a mother for the first time at the age of 15, which prompted her parents and family to disregard her, but she went on to enroll in evening classes. Through her friend David Akinduro, whom she eventually married, she got the opportunity to visit the United Kingdom in 1959.

The marriage, however, finally fell apart owing to domestic violence. She married Thomas Lycett after her divorce from Akinduro, and their marriage lasted for many years. However, at the age of 65, she was robbed and raped in her Egbe home in 2006.

She celebrated her 80th birthday on February 3, 2021, with greetings from family and friends from all across the world.
