Murphy Afolabi got his start in the Yoruba film business as a child actor in Ifa Olokun, under the guidance of Dagunro. In this interview with BAYO ADEOYE, the Osun State-born actor discusses his profession, struggles, and goals. Excerpts: Have you been in the film industry for a long time? I started working in the film industry 21 years ago. That’s a significant amount of time. So, what age were you at the time? I began when I was a young child in Osogbo, Osun State. My enthusiasm for acting was influenced by the late Duro Ladipo and Yemi Eleburunibon. My uncle is Yemi Eleburunibon, and with his help, I appeared in a few episodes of Ifa Olokun in Osogbo back then. In addition, when I was in high school, I was known for my love for theatre as I always participated in many plays.

So, how did you eventually become a notable actor?
I returned to school after performing in Ifa Olokun. My enthusiasm for acting, on the other hand, did not wane. I was fortunate to be surrounded by folks like Fadeyi Egbeji. But it was when I moved to Lagos and met Fasasi Olabanke (Dagunro), who is from the same town as me, that I decided to pursue acting full-time. I joined his company and began working as a full-time actor. What film catapulted you into the spotlight? Actually, we were more interested in theater productions than home movies at the time. As a result, we traveled across the country, especially to Yoruba-speaking areas, to perform theatrical plays. However, in 1993, we made a film called Eti Kunkun. The film, however, never saw the light of day.
So, you learnt traditional medicine from your father?
No, he taught me Yoruba language and incantation. I am so enamored of Yoruba heritage and culture that I have never shied away from investing in research. I’m now working on a film called Sango and Oya. Many stories have already been written about them, but mine will be unique. Before the major production, I spent a lot of money on it. I traveled to Ede in order to meet their worshippers, who aided me. I spent a total of N1 million on it.
You said earlier that your father sometimes assists you, so one can say that you must have some charms. How many times have you run to him for spiritual assistance?
I swear to God, I’ve never gone to him for help because I wanted to create a reputation for myself in the business. You won’t discover a single incision on my body if you look closely. Even as a deterrent to witches and wizards? I can’t tell you this, my brother, since life is cruel. People may want to test the degree of my abilities since they regard me as the child of a native doctor, therefore I must defend myself as much as possible. God, on the other hand, is my protector and shield.
