Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has been named the 2024 FIFA Puskás Award winner, recognizing the most outstanding goal of the year.

The Argentine’s breathtaking overhead kick against Everton in the Premier League, scored in November of last year, secured him the prestigious honor. While the goal narrowly missed the entry window for the 2023 award, its brilliance ensured it was unforgettable in the 2024 race.

Garnacho’s moment of magic came in the third minute at Goodison Park, as he soared to meet Diogo Dalot’s cross with shades of Wayne Rooney’s iconic overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011. The sheer athleticism and improvisation left fans and pundits in awe.

“I can’t believe it, to be honest,” Garnacho said at the time, speaking to Sky Sports. “I didn’t see how I scored; I just heard the crowd and thought, ‘Oh my god.’ It’s probably one of the best goals I’ve scored. It reminds me of Rooney’s goal—both are incredible.”

His instincts were correct: not only was it a contender for goal of the season, but it ultimately earned the title of the world’s best goal in 2024.

Garnacho, who turned 20 in July, continues to impress on the pitch. He ended last season with 10 goals in all competitions and has already added 8 more to his tally midway through the 2024/25 campaign.

This marks the fifth time in the 15-year history of the Puskás Award that the winning goal was scored in a Premier League match, joining previous winners Olivier Giroud (2017), Mohamed Salah (2018), Son Heung-min (2020), and Erik Lamela (2021).
