Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has shed light on his challenging relationship with France manager Didier Deschamps, offering insights into the tension that has emerged between the two this season.

After being named France captain following Hugo Llorisโ€™ international retirement post-2022 World Cup, Mbappe, now 25 and capped 86 times, led his nation to the Euro 2024 semi-finals. However, his performances were hampered by a broken nose, and he managed just one penalty goal throughout the tournament.

Since completing his high-profile move to Real Madrid in the summer, questions have surfaced about Mbappeโ€™s commitment to the national team. While he joined the squad in September, he has not featured for France since. Speculation about external pressure from Real Madrid arose when Mbappe was left out of the October squad, and his continued absence in November came as a major surprise.

In a recent interview with Canal+, Mbappe addressed his absence for the first time, while reaffirming his loyalty to the national team.

Mbappe’s Perspective

“My love for the French team hasnโ€™t changed,” Mbappe stated. “Yes, I miss it, because itโ€™s been a long time since Iโ€™ve been there.

“In September, I asked the coach not to call me up. I had just arrived in Madrid and had an extremely short vacation. The coach insisted that I come, but it didnโ€™t go well. Still, itโ€™s the French team, and I remain committed.

“In October, I was injured. Those decisions were made between the medical staffs, and the coach decided it was better not to include me. Then came November. I wanted to join the squad, but I canโ€™t say why I wasnโ€™t selected. Thatโ€™s the coachโ€™s decision, and I respect it. Heโ€™s the boss.”

Deschampsโ€™ Silence and Future Leadership

Deschamps has offered no explanation for Mbappeโ€™s omission, though reports suggest he plans to reassess Mbappeโ€™s role as captain. The next international break in March 2025, when France faces Croatia, could mark a turning point for their partnership.

Despite the tension, Mbappeโ€™s statements highlight his ongoing respect for Deschamps and his unwavering dedication to the French national team.
