Ballon d’Or chief Vincent Garcia has announced that Cristiano Ronaldo has chosen to abstain from voting.

Garcia suggested that Ronaldo is among those “very upset” with the decisions surrounding the awards. The Portuguese superstar has won the Ballon d’Or five times, trailing only Lionel Messi, who has eight. However, Ronaldo has not been named the best player in the world since 2017.

After Messi’s victory in 2023, Ronaldo liked an Instagram post claiming that Messi had won three Ballon d’Ors too many. This year marks the first time in 21 years that neither Messi nor Ronaldo appears on the 30-man shortlist.

Garcia told The Times: “Winners have the right to attend all future ceremonies, but not all do; some are very upset with us. I can’t say for sure that Cristiano is, as I don’t communicate with him directly, but I know that former winners vote for the Kopa Trophy—awarded to the best young player—and Cristiano didn’t vote last year or this year either.”
