Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as England’s manager, starting on January 1, 2025.
The 51-year-old German has signed an 18-month contract and becomes the third non-British permanent manager of the men’s national team, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Gareth Southgate resigned in July after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Lee Carsley, who has overseen four matches since taking on the interim role in August, will continue as manager for the upcoming Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month.

Tuchel, who departed Bayern Munich at the end of last season, expressed his pride in leading the England team: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
Chief Executive Mark Bullingham stated that the Football Association (FA) has appointed “one of the best coaches in the world.” The FA noted that Tuchel was the “preferred candidate” after interviewing several managers, and the board approved the decision last week. Tuchel signed his contract on October 8.
Under Carsley, England suffered a loss to Greece on October 10 but secured a victory against Finland on October 13. An FA statement indicated that the announcement was delayed to minimize distractions during the recent international camp.
Anthony Barry, an English coach who previously worked with Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, will serve as his assistant.
Tuchel has an impressive coaching resume, having won the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund and two Ligue 1 titles at Paris Saint-Germain, including a domestic treble in the 2019-20 season. He became Chelsea manager in January 2021, leading the team to victory in the Champions League, Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup before his dismissal in September 2022. Following Bayern’s failure to win the Bundesliga title for the first time since the 2011-12 season, Tuchel left despite having a year remaining on his contract.
