Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has called on Erik ten Hag to appoint Kobbie Mainoo as the new captain of Manchester United, stating that the young English international represents the future of the club.

Speaking to Top Offshore Sportsbooks, Petit emphasized that Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have the potential to be leaders at Old Trafford and should be given more responsibility.

“I’m looking at the squad and I don’t see any leaders. United’s standout players have been Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo,” Petit said. “It would be a bold move, but if I were Ten Hag, I might make a strong decision and appoint Mainoo, the future of the club, as captain.”

Petit added that while Mainoo is young, his rising status within the England national team and his popularity with the fans at Old Trafford make him an ideal candidate. He suggested that Ten Hag could send a message to his underperforming players by backing those who are ready to fight for the club.

Bruno Fernandes is currently the captain of Manchester United, after Erik ten Hag stripped Harry Maguire of the armband and handed it to the Portuguese midfielder.
