At this point, the left-back position at Manchester United seems almost cursed. It’s been a long time since Erik ten Hag has had his left-backs fit and ready to play for consecutive matches. Luke Shaw has been in a frustrating cycle of playing a few games and then being sidelined for extended periods. Tyrell Malacia has also been out for so long that fans might have forgotten he’s even on the team.

Currently, the most reliable option at left-back for ten Hag is Diogo Dalot, who is naturally a right-back. To address this situation, Manchester United are reportedly looking to the transfer market. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the club is interested in signing Miguel Gutierrez, a fullback from Girona who earns £410,800 a year.

Gutierrez, a 23-year-old Olympic Gold Medalist, isn’t just on Manchester United’s radar. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Borussia Dortmund have also shown interest in the player, who recorded seven assists in La Liga last season.

Interestingly, Gutierrez has a history with Real Madrid, having won a double with the club in the 2021/22 season. This could continue Manchester United’s recent trend of signing former Real Madrid players, following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Casemiro, and Raphael Varane.

Last season, Manchester United had another Spanish left-back with Real Madrid ties, Sergio Reguilon, who remains available on the market. Signing Gutierrez would be a continuation of this pattern.

Known for his attacking style and ability to overlap, Gutierrez would be a great fit alongside Marcus Rashford, who plays on the left wing for Manchester United. Gutierrez’s work rate and stamina would allow him to cover the left flank, providing Rashford more freedom to play centrally.

With the transfer window closing soon, Manchester United has limited time to finalize a deal for a new left-back. It will be interesting to see if they secure Gutierrez’s signature in the coming days, giving ten Hag more options for his squad.
