Enzo Fernandez has apologized to his Chelsea teammates upon joining the squad in the United States, following a racism controversy involving the midfielder.

This month, Fernandez faced backlash after sharing an Instagram video allegedly showing him and his Argentina teammates participating in a chant targeting the France national team during Copa America celebrations. The incident was described as “uninhibited racism” by Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, and while FIFA continues its investigation, Chelsea’s internal disciplinary review has concluded.

Fernandez publicly apologized for the video, which the French Football Federation claimed contained racist and discriminatory content. He met with his Chelsea teammates at their training camp in Atalanta on Monday and offered his apology, which was reportedly accepted.

The 23-year-old, who joined Chelsea in February 2023 for a British-record £106.8 million from Benfica, has already resumed training with the team in the USA. Fernandez has committed to contributing to an anti-discrimination foundation, with Chelsea matching his donation, and discussions are ongoing about where the funds will be allocated.

Chelsea initiated disciplinary proceedings against Fernandez two weeks ago after the video sparked controversy. Fernandez has since made both public and private apologies to his teammates, with Monday marking his first opportunity to address them in person.

Chelsea captain Reece James and French defender Axel Disasi have been key figures in the discussions with Fernandez, and the club’s disciplinary process has now been completed. Fernandez is considered proactive in addressing the issue, avoiding a fine by pledging support for anti-racism and anti-discrimination initiatives.
