Arsenal are leading the race to sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad and are expected to ramp up their interest shortly, according to 90min.
The Gunners are close to finalizing their first summer signing, with Riccardo Calafiori’s move from Bologna set to be completed after a medical this weekend. Calafiori will then join the first team on their USA tour.
Once Calafiori’s transfer is finalized, Arsenal will turn their attention to Merino, a key target in their search for a new midfielder. Despite mainly coming off the bench, Merino made a significant impact this summer as Spain advanced to Euro 2024, scoring the decisive goal in extra time against Germany in the quarter-finals.

Merino has long been a target for Arsenal, with manager Mikel Arteta spearheading the interest even before his recent performances. Although Merino turned 28 last month, Arsenal value his extensive experience, evidenced by his 348 senior club appearances and previous Premier League stint with Newcastle United.
Merino is entering the final year of his contract with Real Sociedad and could be available for as little as ยฃ21m (โฌ25m). While Real Sociedad would prefer to keep him, they are pessimistic about extending his contract and are more confident about retaining fellow Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi, who has publicly expressed his commitment to the club.
Atletico Madrid is Arsenal’s main rival for Merino, with Diego Simeoneโs side also in the market for a midfielder. Chelseaโs Conor Gallagher is also on Atletico’s radar, but he would cost significantly more than Merino. Barcelona is interested in Merino as well, but they are currently prioritizing other targets, including Athletic Club winger Nico Williams.
