Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has cautioned the Spanish club against deceiving its supporters and has urged them to maintain openness and transparency regarding their current situation.
Barça finds themselves approximately €200 million beyond their LaLiga-mandated annual spending limit of €204 million. This financial constraint prevents the Catalans from registering any potential new players or contract renewals.
Piqué expresses skepticism about the club’s short-term prospects and emphasizes the importance of honesty with the fans. He states, “The fans want honesty and transparency. If the reality is tough, then say it. What you cannot do is sell smoke and mirrors and say we’re going to win the Champions League if you then don’t have the money to compete.”

While acknowledging his limited knowledge of the club’s current situation, Piqué emphasizes the significance of telling the truth to the members. He shared his thoughts on Ibai Llanos’ Twitch channel, saying, “I don’t know the club’s situation at the moment – from what I can gather it doesn’t seem that good – but what the socios [members] value is being told the truth to their faces.”
Piqué further elaborates on the potential pitfalls of making promises without the financial means to fulfill them, using the example of saying, “‘I am going to sign [Erling] Haaland,’ which looks great, but how do you do it? I’m just using Haaland as an example; it’s not to do with rumors. I could equally say [Kylian] Mbappé or whoever.”
