Wayne Rooney has openly shared his desire to secure the managerial position at Manchester United, considering it his “dream job,” despite facing a setback in his early coaching career with a swift dismissal from Birmingham City.
Having amassed a record 253 goals in a 13-year playing tenure at Old Trafford, Rooney transitioned into coaching, initially as a player-coach at Derby County. Subsequently, he returned to former club D.C. United and briefly managed Birmingham City for 83 days before his departure.
Despite the recent challenges, Rooney, who recently turned 38, remains optimistic about his coaching and managerial prospects, envisioning a potential return to the Premier League. While expressing aspirations for the top roles at Manchester United or Everton, he acknowledges the gradual process involved in achieving such goals.

Reflecting on his managerial journey, Rooney remarked, “I definitely want to get back into management. The aim is to manage in the Premier League eventually. Manchester United or Everton are the dream jobs, but it’s a process.” Despite setbacks, he sees himself as a resilient fighter in the managerial arena.
Rooney also acknowledged the timing challenges at Birmingham, stating, “Maybe the timing wasn’t right when I went in at Birmingham; the fans didn’t accept me from day one.” Undeterred, he views setbacks as part of the managerial journey and looks ahead to the next decade with optimism.
Few of Rooney’s former Manchester United teammates have ventured into coaching, with Michael Carrick notable for his work at Middlesbrough. Others, such as Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Roy Keane, Wes Brown, and Owen Hargreaves, have found roles as pundits. Robin van Persie, however, is pursuing coaching badges and recently observed training at United as part of his UEFA Pro License course with the KNVB.
