The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has tentatively agreed to hold the 2025 Cup of Nations in Morocco during July and August, according to an anonymous CAF official who spoke to AFP. This comes after CAF president Patrice Motsepe had previously refrained from confirming the tournament’s dates, citing logistical challenges for a qualifying competition if held in January and February.
Choosing to host the event in June and July would clash with FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup scheduled for North America. However, the anonymous source revealed that there is “an agreement in principle between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the AFCON to be held during the summer, more precisely in July and August” in 2025.
The proposed dates for the tournament are July 20 to August 16 or 17, 2025. The agreement reportedly received support from FIFA, following discussions that commenced several months ago and intensified during the last edition held in Ivory Coast.

The past two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments experienced date adjustments, with the 2021 event, hosted by Cameroon, played in January and February of 2022. The most recent edition, initially planned for June and July the previous year, was rescheduled due to weather concerns.
Qualification for the 2025 AFCON has not commenced, with a preliminary round scheduled for the upcoming month. Additionally, the 2027 Cup of Nations is set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
