The Nigeria High Commission in South Africa has cautioned Nigerians to exercise caution in their celebrations and expressions if the Super Eagles emerge victorious against the Bafana Bafana in the upcoming African Cup of Nations semi-final match.
This advisory comes in response to alleged inflammatory online comments made by some South Africans against Nigerians residing in the country. The High Commission issued the warning through a statement titled “Advisory on Safe Conduct for Nigerians in South Africa Before, During and After 2024 AFCON Match Between Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana,” released on Monday, February 5, 2024.
The statement urged Nigerians to be mindful of their statements and avoid engaging in provocative celebrations. Specifically, it referenced online comments containing veiled threats against Nigerians, such as those related to “Nigerians cooking jollof rice” and “showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to Super Eagles.”

In light of these concerns, the High Commission advised the Nigerian community to carefully choose where they watch the match, especially in public spaces, and to refrain from loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations if the Super Eagles secure a victory.
Furthermore, the High Commission emphasized the importance of maintaining good behavior and encouraged Nigerians to report any provocations to the relevant authorities. This warning aims to prevent potential xenophobic attacks on Nigerians, recalling previous incidents of violence against foreigners in South Africa based on accusations of drug dealing or job displacement.
