Jadon Sancho has admitted that Marco Reus, the captain of Borussia Dortmund, encouraged him to make a return to the club during the summer. Sancho rekindled his association with the German side on a loan deal after a public dispute with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, stemming from being excluded from the matchday squad against Arsenal in September, which led to his exclusion from the first-team setup.
About a month prior, United and Dortmund faced each other in a pre-season friendly in Las Vegas, and it was during this encounter that Reus initially hinted at the possibility of Sancho returning to the club.
“There’s a video clip from Las Vegas where [Reus] told me to go back to Dortmund,” Sancho shared with club media. “He told me, ‘Whenever you’re ready, I’ll be here.’ That’s exactly how it was, that’s insider information.”

Shortly after the clash with Ten Hag, 90min reported Dortmund’s interest in Sancho, suggesting that the German side had maintained a connection with the 23-year-old since his departure in 2021.
Sancho revealed that he stayed in contact with Reus and fellow England national Jamie Bynoe-Gittens during his time in Manchester, saying, “Since I left Dortmund, I have stayed in touch with all the players and have always watched the games.” He acknowledged frequent communication, especially with Reus and Bynoe-Gittens, both being from London.
While Sancho’s loan deal with Dortmund does not include an option for a permanent transfer, he is set to return to Manchester United in the summer. The Red Devils are optimistic about him rebuilding his transfer value, aiming to recoup a sum closer to the £73 million they paid for his signing three years ago.
The possibility of Sancho reintegrating at Old Trafford is not ruled out. However, sources suggest that an apology to Ten Hag would be necessary for him to remain at United, a step Sancho has thus far refused to take.
