Jordan Henderson is on the verge of making a return to European football with Ajax after reportedly finalizing an agreement to part ways with Al Ettifaq, as per recent reports.
The midfielder’s move to the Saudi Pro League side in the summer of 2023 stirred controversy, especially after leaving Liverpool following a highly successful 12-year stint. Henderson, once regarded as a significant supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, faced criticism for joining a league in Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is prohibited and carries severe penalties, including death. Despite this, Henderson maintained that his transfer aimed to elevate the profile of the growing league.
Speculation about Henderson’s discontent in the Middle East arose in early January, with 90min disclosing last week that he was preparing for talks with Al Ettifaq officials to express his desire for a return to European football.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Henderson has now successfully negotiated his departure from Al Ettifaq and is on the brink of securing a permanent move to Ajax.
Ajax has faced challenges during the 2023/24 campaign, initially struggling under head coach Maurice Steijn, who has since been replaced by John van ‘t Schip on an interim basis until the season’s end. Despite a difficult start, Ajax has managed to climb to fifth in the Eredivisie table and is currently nine points away from securing a Champions League spot. Additionally, their third-place finish in the Europa League group has led them to participate in the Europa Conference League, where they are scheduled to face Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in a two-legged knockout round play-off.
