Tottenham Hotspur’s head coach, Ange Postecoglou, has expressed his lack of concern regarding the potential encounter with Andre Onana, who is bound for AFCON, during next week’s match against Manchester United. Onana has been called up to the Cameroon squad for the winter tournament, with their group stage starting on January 15.
Despite Erik ten Hag’s revelation that talks are ongoing with the Cameroonian FA to retain Onana for the clash against Tottenham on January 14, Postecoglou, in a press conference on Thursday, asserted that he holds no opinion on United’s efforts to keep the goalkeeper. He indicated that he is unfazed if the 27-year-old ends up playing, stating, “What other clubs do doesn’t affect me or the way I view it. I’ve spent zero time worrying about the Onana situation, not bothered at all about what other clubs do.”
FIFA rules mandate the release of players participating in the AFCON from January 1 onwards, allowing clubs to negotiate with federations for potential extensions. Tottenham has already bid farewell to Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, representing Mali and Senegal, respectively, before their FA Cup third-round clash with Burnley. Additionally, captain Son Heung-min has joined the South Korea squad for the Asian Cup.

In contrast, Manchester United has seen the return of Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez to full first-team training after injuries, boosting their squad for upcoming matches against Wigan and Tottenham. Similarly, Tottenham has welcomed back Micky van de Ven following a hamstring problem.
