Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has expressed his openness to contribute to the Nigeria National team but not in a managerial role. During an interview with CNN Sports, the ex-Chelsea midfielder stated his preference for addressing issues from a higher position.
Mikel said, “I would love to get involved with the Super Eagles, but not as a manager; I don’t want to get sacked; I don’t think I can handle that very well. I want to be involved with the national team as someone trying to fix the problems from the top, if it means being a mediator between the players and the NFF to ensure proper management and collaboration for success.”
He emphasized the importance of success starting from the top and expressed his desire to play a role in facilitating that. Mikel also shared his admiration for fellow African players, naming Didier Drogba as the greatest African player in his opinion.

Having retired from football in 2022 at the age of 35, Mikel reflected on his successful career. Starting with Norwegian club Lyn in 2004, he enjoyed a lengthy spell at Chelsea, winning numerous titles. His career also took him to China, England, and Turkey, achieving success with clubs like Trabzonspor and Stoke City.
On the international stage, Mikel represented Nigeria 91 times, winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013. As he contemplates a future involvement with the Super Eagles, Mikel remains a respected figure among players and fans alike.
