Manchester United is poised to send Sergio Reguilon back to Tottenham Hotspur after reaching an agreement to terminate his season-long loan.

Reguilon joined the Red Devils late in the summer 2023 transfer window on a deal lasting until the end of the season. United, facing left-back shortages due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, took on Reguilon, who was surplus to requirements at Spurs.

Despite making 12 appearances for United this season, The Athletic reports that Reguilon is now set to return to Tottenham. United had been contemplating triggering a break clause in the loan deal at the midway point of the season. The squad has been reinforced by Shaw’s return to fitness, and Malacia is also nearing a comeback. Right-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat have stepped in on the left as needed.

Before securing Reguilon, United had considered a move for Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, but an agreement couldn’t be reached with the Blues, and Cucurella stayed at Stamford Bridge.

Reguilon played extensively for Tottenham in the preseason under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, but it became clear that Destiny Udogie would be the starting left-back for the 2023/24 campaign.

Tottenham may choose to retain Reguilon for the rest of their season, considering they, like United, are only participating in the Premier League and FA Cup. The option of him leaving on loan again remains open, provided he does not make a first-team appearance this month, as FIFA rules dictate that players can only feature for two clubs in a given season.

Tottenham’s upcoming fixtures include a third-round FA Cup clash with Burnley on Friday and a return to Premier League action against United on Sunday, January 14.
