The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has implemented a provision that will bar clubs affiliated with the European Super League from participating in the Italian Serie A starting from the 2024-2025 season.

The European Super League emerged as a highly contentious development in European football in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Introduced in April 2021, the league attracted interest from twelve top European clubs, with notable names such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Juventus considered pioneering members.

However, the league faced a rapid demise within 72 hours of its inception due to vehement protests from fans and stern opposition from FIFA, UEFA, and domestic football federations. Juventus was the final club to withdraw from the initiative, while the league’s sponsors, A22 Sports, continued legal battles for its legalization, alongside Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
In a surprising turn of events, the court ruled in favor of the Super League, implying that clubs opting to join the league would not face football bans. Nevertheless, the FIGC has introduced a clause preventing clubs from simultaneously participating in both the European Super League and the domestic Serie A.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared on Twitter today, December 29, that the FIGC has decided to endorse a clause prohibiting Italian clubs’ involvement in the Super League. The FIGC specifies that Serie A clubs are not permitted to join any competition other than those sanctioned by UEFA, FIFA, and FIGC. Any club choosing to join the Super League will face exclusion from Serie A in the 2024/2025 season.
