Peseiro’s initial contract with the NFF concluded at the end of June this year. Despite a recent six-month extension until the end of the 2023 AFCON, doubts persist about the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2026 World Cup, having accumulated only two points in Group C.
Critics argue that the team’s struggles extend beyond the coach, blaming the NFF for issues such as unpaid bonuses and allowances that allegedly hinder the players’ commitment to the national team.
Ochiba coach Emmanuel Brown emphasizes that resolving internal issues within the NFF is crucial, stating that even a high-profile manager like Jose Mourinho would not alter the team’s performance without fundamental changes.
Idris Musa Adinoyi, captain of Dawaki Rangers FC, suggests terminating Peseiro’s contract, emphasizing the need for a coach who can provide clear direction and style of play, especially with the 2023 AFCON approaching.
Hon. Nse Essien, a member of the NFF Board, clarifies that the Sports Ministry, not the NFF, is responsible for Peseiro’s employment. Despite acknowledging unhappiness with the current situation, he highlights financial constraints as a hindrance to terminating the coach’s contract.
