England manager Gareth Southgate has commended Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance in the Euro 2024 qualifying victory over Malta on Friday night.
In a tactical shift, Southgate positioned Alexander-Arnold in midfield rather than his usual right-back role for the 2-0 win, and the Liverpool standout once again showcased his skills. The 25-year-old successfully completed 92% of his passes, won five duels, and made five crucial recoveries during an energetic display at Wembley Stadium.
Previously facing challenges in securing playing time as a full-back on the international stage, Alexander-Arnold has emerged as a pivotal player for Southgate following a successful transition to the midfield with the Three Lions.

Addressing the media post-match, Southgate was quick to laud Alexander-Arnold, stating, “I thought [Alexander-Arnold] used the ball really well. He possesses outstanding quality, and he, along with Phil [Foden], appeared to be the ones most capable of unlocking the game for us in the first half.”
Before the match, Alexander-Arnold acknowledged that his abilities were well-suited for playing in midfield.
“In my teenage years, I played as a midfielder, so it’s a position I have some familiarity with,” explained the Liverpool star. “Knowing how to conduct myself and perform in the middle of the pitch is something I’ve been tasked with, sitting down, watching, and trying to learn and adapt.
“As for whether I’m a midfielder or not, my specific skill set is probably best suited to someone who plays in the middle of the pitch – someone who controls the game, sets the tempo, creates, breaks lines, and progresses the ball up the pitch. Those kinds of skills are suited to someone in the middle of the pitch.
“You probably get more out of me when I’m in the middle, and I’m able to showcase that skill set as much as possible.”
