Marcus Rashford received a red card during the first half of Manchester United’s Champions League match against Copenhagen at Parken Stadium on Wednesday night.
The forward returned to the team after a minor injury that had sidelined him during the previous weekend’s crucial Premier League victory over Fulham.
While Rasmus Hojlund grabbed the first-half headlines in a positive light for Copenhagen, Rashford became the center of attention for the wrong reasons as he did not make it to halftime.

The 26-year-old was sent off for an incident involving Copenhagen defender Elias Jellert. Initially unnoticed by Lithuanian referee Donatas Rumsas, a VAR review was initiated, prompting the official to reevaluate the situation.
Upon reviewing the pitchside monitor, it was observed that Rashford, under pressure from Jellert, attempted to shield the ball. However, in his endeavor to retain possession, Rashford’s foot went over the ball and inadvertently connected with his opponent’s ankle.
The impact on Jellert appeared excruciating, particularly when viewed in slow motion. His foot seemed unnaturally planted and bent as Rashford collided with him.
Rashford, focused solely on the ball and not looking at Jellert, displayed no malicious intent. However, the incident was undeniably reckless and posed a threat to his opponent, prompting Rumsas to issue the red card.
Rashford seemed puzzled by the decision, with former United players Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes defending him in the TNT Sports studio.
“In no way was it a red card,” argued Hargreaves. “Marcus is just attempting to position his leg in front of the ball. He’s not even looking at the ball. When you see a still image as a referee, it looks horrendous. It’s not malicious, it’s not serious foul play.”
Scholes chimed in, stating, “I believe that’s where the referee’s understanding has to come into play. It’s an accident. He’s trying to plant his foot and protect the ball.”
