“Gary Neville labeled Old Trafford the ‘Theatre of Nothing’ in the wake of Manchester United’s disheartening exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Newcastle United.

Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle, leading to their elimination from the League Cup. The Red Devils couldn’t find a response to Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock’s goals, as Newcastle avenged their previous season’s Carabao Cup final loss to United in spectacular fashion on Wednesday evening. Neville had previously defended Erik ten Hag, despite the team’s poor results, as the club grappled with an ongoing sale process and associated uncertainty. However, the former Manchester United defender expressed his frustration after yet another heavy defeat, following their 3-0 loss to fierce rivals Manchester City the previous weekend.

On social media, Neville posted, “Last night, we witnessed the Theatre of Dreams transform into the Theatre of Nothing. Every Manchester United fan is disheartened and uninspired. On the pitch, the players appeared stunned, their performances lackluster, and the manager visibly struggling. We’ve seen this scenario before, we know how it concludes, and we’ve reached a breaking point.”

Neville highlighted the disparity in managerial competence between Newcastle and the lack thereof at Manchester United to illustrate the difference in quality between the two teams on the field. He praised Dan Ashworth, the sporting director at St. James Park.”

“While ascending to the gantry last night, I had an unexpected encounter with Dan Ashworth. He’s the individual who reshaped the FA’s organizational framework, positioned Brighton for an extraordinary era of success, and laid a robust groundwork for the new owners at Newcastle,” he remarked.

“A testament to his competence, impeccable qualifications, and mastery in his field, Dan collaborates seamlessly with his coaching staff, recruitment team, and other departments. In the past two matches, Manchester United faced adversaries boasting well-established football departments dedicated to bolstering both on-field and off-field aspects, a stark contrast to our club. We lack a sporting director! I recall my trips to Newcastle, where I couldn’t help but sympathize with their dedicated fans, witnessing how their vitality and enthusiasm had waned under the previous ownership of Mike Ashley. It was truly disheartening.”

United will return to action on Saturday against Fulham in a Premier League fixture at Craven Cottage.
