A shortlist of five candidates for the Manager of the Month award for January has been released by the Premier League.

Every manager nominated for the accolade led their team to an unbeaten month, and now that just a few teams remain in the competition, focus is shifting to the FA Cup fourth round.

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, may be the most well-known name on the short list. He won the split award in November and December. In January, the Gunners earned seven out of a possible nine points, including their exciting 3-2 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.

On the south coast, Brighton has been equally outstanding, winning seven of a possible nine games under Roberto De Zerbi. A 7-1 aggregate score against Everton and Liverpool was one of their month’s highlights.

After earning eight of a possible 12 points in January, Nottingham Forest was able to escape the relegation zone. The fact that Steve Cooper’s team didn’t lose a single game may have been more important than the fact that they defeated Southampton and Leicester, two other struggling teams.

Thomas Frank led Brentford to seven out of a possible nine points, while Unai Emery led Aston Villa to ten out of a possible 12 points, including a crucial and stunning 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Bees’ dominant victory over Jurgen Klopp’s faltering Liverpool at the GTech Community Stadium was their most significant victory.
