The most prestigious football tournament, the FIFA World Cup, held its 22nd edition last year. However, the following nations have historically and/or currently been prohibited from taking part in the event:

1. Japan – 1950 FIFA World Cup

Japan, like Germany, was not allowed to participate in the 1950 FIFA tournament due to their involvement in the war.

2. Germany – 1950 FIFA World Cup

The renowned competition was postponed in 1942 and 1946 as a result of German engagement in World War II. The competition continued in 1950, but as payback for their role in the war, Germany was excluded this time.

3. Mexico – 1990 World Cup

Mexico was disqualified from the 1990 World Cup in Italy because they had four players who were too old to participate in the qualifying rounds of the world junior competition.

4. South Africa – 1961-1992

After enacting discriminatory sports rules the previous year, South Africa was prohibited from competing in any FIFA competition for more than three decades (1961–1992). They were formally reinstated in 1992.

5. Chile – 1994 World Cup

For using a concealed blade in a glove to injure himself and then pretending to be wounded by a flare thrown by a fan during a match against Brazil in 1989, Chile goalie Roberto Rojas received a lifetime ban from football and his team was disqualified from participation in the 1994 World Cup.

6. Myanmar – 2006 World Cup
