Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala is set to make history as the first-ever recipient of FIFA’s new “Marta Award.”
Named after the legendary Brazilian footballer, the “Marta Award” honors the best goal in women’s football, paralleling the male-dominated Puskás Award. This prestigious accolade recognizes the most outstanding goal scored between August 21, 2023, and August 10, 2024, and will be presented at The Best FIFA Football Awards in January 2025.
Oshoala, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, has been nominated for this inaugural award following her stunning goal for Barcelona in their Champions League match against Benfica on November 14, 2023.

The Nigerian striker is competing against ten other nominees, including Delphine Cascarino, Marina Hegering, Sakina Karchaoui, Paulina Krumbiegel, Marta, Nina Matejic, Giuseppina Moraca, Mayra Pelayo, Beth Mead, and Trinity Rodman.
Oshoala’s remarkable goal came just 40 seconds after she replaced Mariona Caldentey in the 60th minute. The 28-year-old produced a breathtaking bicycle kick that left Benfica’s goalkeeper Lena Pauels helpless.
In other FIFA award news, Paul Onuachu is also a contender for the FIFA Puskás Award, which recognizes the best goal in men’s football.
