Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that his tactics have been “more than” influenced by former rival José Mourinho.

Traditionally, Arsenal had been characterized as a team focused on attacking football yet perceived as defensively weak since the latter part of Arsène Wenger’s tenure. Arteta, however, has worked to change that perception, transforming the Gunners into one of the Premier League’s more aggressive sides.

The “dark arts” of Arsenal’s play were notably highlighted during their 2-2 draw against Manchester City, where the team defended deep in the second half following Leandro Trossard’s red card. This approach has drawn comparisons to Mourinho’s Chelsea teams, known for their defensive strategies and effectiveness in high-stakes matches.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Arteta was asked about Mourinho’s influence, given their encounters as both players and managers. “More than influence,” he replied. “You learn a lot from other top coaches, and you try to understand why they have been successful, what makes their teams special and consistent—especially at this level.”

He added, “At this level, with the number of games we are playing, you might have an idea of how the game will unfold, but if it takes a different turn, do you have the ability to adapt and embrace that style of play? That’s the level we’re at.”

During his tenure at Tottenham, Mourinho praised Arteta, particularly during a period when Arsenal struggled in the Premier League. After Spurs defeated Arsenal 2-0 in December 2020, Mourinho remarked, “I want to give a good word to Mikel because he gave us a very difficult game. Tactically they are very good and posed problems for us. While they may not be performing well in the table now, I believe that with these players and with Mikel, Arsenal will be Arsenal again.”
