Whitemoney, a Nigerian reality TV personality, chef, and musician, recently spoke candidly with TVC’s eSplash about his music career, which is still not progressing as he had hoped. He was questioned about how he feels about the criticism he receives for his songs and how he manages to carry on in the face of it all during the show. What Whitemoney said is as follows.
During the show, Whitemoney was asked “Yesterday, I was looking through your page and I really like “Egwu” and there is no how I’m going to see your post and I’m not going to read comments. I saw some people were hailing, and then I saw a lot of people were like “Hmmm, just stay in one place”. A particular woman said “I supported you in Big Brother, but I will tell you the truth, you’re not supposed to be doing music.” Then I’m wondering, why? How exactly do you feel when you see comments like this? And then what makes you still want to continue doing your thing and not minding what people say considering the fact these people are still the ones that you expect to consume your music?” He responded:
WHITEMONEY: So the truth is that if you look at most of the A-List, nobody started and had a good path. A nice, smooth sailing. Burna Boy was criticized. Davido was criticized. Portable is most criticized. But the main thing is they’re pursuing their dreams. But from the platform from which I’m coming out from which is Big Brother, there is always this stereotypical thought, this boxing that comes out, that whenever you come out of that show, you’re not supposed to be nothing more than an influencer, that is if you even see anything to influence. Influencer, or they just expect you to be doing whatever it is they know you for doing in the house, forgetting that the sky is very big and you could chase any dream that you want to do. So funny enough, I didn’t just start music. When I was in the house, Big Brother played “Rosemary” which I released before I went into the house 2017/2018. But there are people who just want to control you. They want to control how you live your life. Your narrative. How you move. They want to control everything about you. And it will shock you that most of the people saying all these things, they will see me real life, they no fit say shinshin. They can’t say anything. They are bandwagons. Go on Youtube and go and see comments on Youtube. You will be shocked that most of the people that are commenting, they have not watched anything. They just follow what people are saying without even hearing or listening. The problem is that I came out of Big Brother. I didn’t come out as an artiste, I came out as a reality TV star so they want me in that cooking space forgetting that 99% of the music on the show, I composed it.
