The captain therefore matched Pele’s “official” Fifa-recognized record.

Neymar is doubtful, though, of whether he will get the opportunity to increase his total after the heartbreaking World Cup quarterfinal loss.

The forward, who will be 34 by the time the following tournament begins, started crying at the end of the game.

Regarding his post-game plans, Neymar frankly stated: “I do not know. I believe that speaking in the heat of the moment is terrible. Perhaps I’m not thinking clearly.

“To declare that this is the end would be pushing it, but I also make no guarantees. Let’s wait and see what occurs next.

“I’d like to use this time to reflect on it and consider what I want for myself. I won’t completely rule out the possibility of playing with Brazil, nor do I promise to return.

“I need to consider this issue more and decide what is best for the national team and me.”

After the game, Pele, who is fighting intestinal cancer and has been watching the tournament from a hospital bed, paid respect to Neymar.

The 82-year-old thanked Neymar for matching his Brazil record in a moving Instagram post.

He stated: “I watched you mature, I consistently supported you, and now I can congratulate you on surpassing the Brazilian National Team in terms of goals scored. It’s far more than just a number, as we both understand.

“Our primary responsibility as athletes is to motivate. Motivate the younger generations, the professionals of today, and most importantly, motivate the fans of our sport.

“Sadly, it is not the happiest day for us, but you will always serve as an example for others to aspire to. I’ve discovered that as time passes, our legacy becomes stronger.”

As I did in every game I watched you on the field, he said, “Keep encouraging us all. I will continue to punch the air of happiness with every goal you score.”

Pele scored 77 goals for Brazil in 92 games, whereas Neymar has the same total from 124 appearances.

Brazilian women’s team captain Marta holds the all-time scoring record with 115 goals.
