For the Ballon d’Or awards in 2022, Darwin Nunez of Liverpool and five other players received no votes.

Nobody was surprised when Karim Benzema, who had a fantastic season with Real Madrid, received the golden trophy at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. With votes cast by sports journalists from all around the world as well as the captains and coaches of international teams governed by FIFA, the 2021–22 season marked the first time a Ballon d’Or was given based on a single season.

Nunez had a successful season with Benfica before joining Liverpool for £68 million. While still representing Lisbon, the Uruguayan scored a stunning 26 goals in just 28 games of the Primeira Liga in addition to six goals in ten Champions League matches. Nunez’s campaign did not succeed in winning over voters, despite the fact that he defeated the reigning champion Lionel Messi, who was not even nominated this year.

Nunez was one of the thirty nominees who made it to the illustrious ceremony’s evening. It was revealed a few hours before the show started that the 23-year-old tied for last with several famous competitors who had not garnered a single vote.

Among the six were former Chelsea players Antonio Rudiger of Real Madrid and Joao Cancelo of Manchester City. Joshua Kimmich, Mike Maignan of AC Milan, and Christopher Nkunku all met the same fate.

Nunez may be pleased with himself for being the only player from Uruguay to place in the top 30, as he is expected to have a successful career. However, his lackluster Premier League start at Anfield has raised questions about his viability.
